Does anyone follow Motor Trend’s “______ of the Year”? Previous years felt more like either lame advertisements, or halo/hero car worship (PT Cruiser, Thunderbird - though I liked it a lot - VW Beetle, Chevy Volt).
This year the Ford Super Duty took TruckOTY, which seemed obvious, one of the Mercedes SUVs (GLC?) got SUVOTY, and the Chevy bolt took CarOTY. I was hoping for the Volvo S90, but as it’s a shorter sedan-ized XC90, seemed unlikely. The bolt actually seems somewhat deserved, but there’s been so many GM vehicles in recent years as MT-OTY winners it seemed like MT was an extension of gm’s advertising arm. Thus, it may be deserved, but still seems a bit unconvincing out of hand.
Thoughts?

Did those vehicles seriously win anything? It’s like they’re smitten by the retro factor and literally nothing else.

I usually skim over them, but they’re not something I put too much stock in. When it was new, the Passat won COTY, and I just remember not knowing why, because it was such a boring choice.

I feel like OTYs should probably be cars that are released. As in, I could go to the dealership and buy one this year (they claim they’re shipping in December, but I’d be willing to bet it’s delayed to Q1 2017).

All that sweet, sweet advertising revenue tho.

Thoughts? Yes, thanks.
The OTY awards back before Al Gore’s Internet (I know! Geez) kinda meant something. Back in the day we had to wait an entire month for automotive news. Unless you cut enough neighborhood lawns to afford a subscription to Auto Week.
They all picked their share of losers. They also picked some winners that went ignored. So.. I’m going with no.

I give it some attention, but not nearly as much as R&T’s PCOTY or MT’s Best Driver’s Car.
C&D’s 10Best > MT COTY, because sometimes the best cars for sale aren’t brand new.

I’ll be more interested in C&D 10Best when they finally take off the fat, ugly accord. If only for the novelty of it. Last year I agreed with most of their picks, TBH.
